Dog Island, Anguilla

Dog Island, a private tropical island off the northern coast of Anguilla, was targeted for the creation of a world-class resort destination. Given the island's tremendous natural assets and fragile ecosystem, it was imperative that any development adhere to sustainable practices and include the preservation of those assets as a fundamental element of the plan. Dog Island is graced with beautiful white-sand beaches, a thriving marine environment, and is home to numerous migratory bird populations and sea turtle nesting sites.
In undertaking the creation of a comprehensive master plan for Dog Island, Canopy was committed not only to preserving the natural assets but also to enhancing them. A team of leading designers, conservationists, marine researchers, and numerous other professionals was assembled to contribute to the design and planning process. The result was a proposed development featuring a high-density, vibrant port-village and a 110 key five-star hotel and spa, eclectic restaurants, a beachfront boardwalk, a public square, retail stores, marine services, and an outdoor theater. The village was also designed to potentially integrate more than 50 residences for employees and managers working at the resort. Included in the site program is an Oceanography and Seabird Research Center, with an adjacent 120-acre migratory bird and sea turtle sanctuary. The harbor is intended to be a certified “Blue Flag” harbor. Great care will be taken in the construction and management of the harbor to limit impacts on the fragile marine environment.
